Autopilot & Navigation Electronics for Sailboats

The autopilot is the single most-loved piece of cruising gear after the boat itself. When it works, life is good. When it fails mid-passage, the crew remembers exactly how good it was. Navigation electronics in general — chartplotters, instruments, AIS, radar — form a connected system that is more reliable when professionally installed and integrated.

Common cruiser systems

  • Raymarine Evolution / Axiom: Most common on production sailboats. Plug-and-play if installed in-network.
  • B&G: Strong sailing-specific features. Preferred by sailing-focused cruisers.
  • Garmin: Excellent multifunction displays. GHP autopilot widely used.
  • Furuno: Commercial-grade. Common on superyachts and serious cruisers.

The NMEA 2000 backbone

Modern marine electronics communicate over NMEA 2000 — a standardised network. A backbone cable runs through the boat with drop cables to each device. Properly terminated, it's reliable. Bad terminations, partial installs, or mixing legacy NMEA 0183 with N2K cause the majority of electronics service calls.
